Naturally Dyed Dabu Print Fabric
House of Amayra

Nomad Clay draws inspiration from the earthy landscapes of desert settlements where craft traditions have long travelled with wandering communities. Printed on a soft ecru base, the fabric carries bold black and red motifs that echo the warmth of sun-baked clay and the grounding tones of desert soil.

The design is created using Dabu printing, a traditional mud-resist block printing technique where hand-carved wooden blocks apply a paste of natural clay and plant-based ingredients to the fabric before dyeing. The resist areas preserve the base colour, allowing patterns to emerge with striking clarity and depth.

The contrast of earthy red and deep black against the natural ecru ground creates a textile that feels both rustic and refined—perfect for contemporary living while honouring traditional craft.

Fabric & Craft

Base Colour: Ecru
Technique: Traditional Dabu Mud Resist Block Printing
Dyes: Natural dyes

Dabu is one of Rajasthan’s oldest printing traditions. The process involves applying a mud resist paste through hand-carved wooden blocks, which protects sections of the fabric during dyeing. After dyeing and washing, the resist is removed to reveal the pattern.

The fabric often passes through multiple stages of printing, dyeing, and drying under the sun, giving Dabu textiles their distinctive texture and character.

Because the entire process is done by hand, subtle variations occur, making each piece unique.

The Beauty of Handmade

Dabu textiles are created entirely by hand using mud-resist printing and natural dyeing techniques. Small variations in colour, texture, or print intensity are natural outcomes of this artisanal process and should be embraced as part of the fabric’s handmade character.

Each piece carries the spirit of slow craft and traditional artistry.
