Naturally Dyed Ajrakh Fabric — Modal
House of Amayra

Inspired by the quiet resilience of desert landscapes, The Date Tree Ajrakh fabric brings together ancient symbolism and timeless craft. Printed on an elegant modal base in soft ecru, the design features alternating patterns of the date palm tree and a delicate desert flower booti, echoing the sparse yet poetic flora of arid lands.

The motifs unfold in rhythmic repetition — a language long embedded in Ajrakh textiles. Shades of deep indigo blue and madder red emerge from natural dye traditions that have been practiced for centuries. Each motif is defined with a distinctive black outline created from jaggery and iron oxide, a traditional Ajrakh formulation that develops its depth slowly through oxidation and sun drying.

The result is a textile that carries both precision and soul — where geometry meets nature, and heritage meets contemporary fashion.

Fabric & Craft

Fabric: Modal
Base Colour: Ecru
Technique: Traditional Ajrakh Hand Block Printing
Dyes: Natural dyes — Indigo, Madder, and iron-based black

Ajrakh printing is one of the most intricate block-printing traditions of the Indian subcontinent. Each design is applied by hand using carved wooden blocks and a layered dyeing process that can involve multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and sun drying to achieve its depth and clarity.

The characteristic palette of indigo blues, rich reds, and deep blacks has long defined this craft, created through natural plant and mineral dyes.

Because every step is done by hand, no two lengths of fabric are ever exactly identical.

Perfect For

This fabric is designed for fashion and accessory applications, including:

• Dresses
• Skirts
• Shirts & tunics
• Stoles & scarves
• Fashion accessories

Due to its soft modal drape and lightweight character, it is not recommended for home linen or upholstery.

Care Instructions

Naturally dyed Ajrakh textiles require gentle care to preserve the beauty of the colours and the integrity of the craft.

Washing

• Hand wash separately in cold water
• Use a mild liquid or pH-neutral detergent
• Natural dyes may release slight colour during the first few washes
• Do not soak for extended periods

Drying

• Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight
• Do not tumble dry
• Do not wring the fabric

Ironing

• Iron on the reverse side at medium heat

Natural dyed fabrics benefit from gentle handling because harsh detergents, heat, or strong sunlight may weaken natural pigments.

The Beauty of Handmade

Ajrakh is a slow craft. Small variations in colour depth, alignment, or pigment marks may occur. These are not defects but evidence of a handcrafted textile created through traditional processes and natural dyes.

Each piece carries the rhythm of the artisan’s hand and the quiet unpredictability of nature.
