The Cosmic Wanderer - Naturally Dyed Ajrakh Cotton Stole - House of Amayra

Inspired by Rahu, the shadow planet of Indian cosmology, The Cosmic Wanderer explores movement, disruption, and the eternal search beyond boundaries. Unlike the visible planets, Rahu is known for its restless energy—symbolic of desire, innovation, and transformation.

Handcrafted by master artisans of Kutch, Gujarat, this stole is created using the ancient Ajrakh resist-dyeing technique, reinterpreted through a contemporary block design. The geometry breaks from classical symmetry, reflecting Rahu’s unconventional, wandering nature while retaining the integrity of traditional craftsmanship.

The colour palette is anchored in a madder red base, achieved using manjistha (madder root)—a dye historically associated with intensity and power. Ecru balances the composition with raw cotton clarity, while black is developed using a fermented blend of iron oxide and jaggery, lending depth and structure to the design.

Each stole undergoes multiple stages of hand block printing, resist application, dyeing, washing, and sun-drying. The entire process spans approximately 30–35 hours of skilled artisan labour over 14–18 days, making every piece unique.
