Naturally Dyed Ajrakh Fabric — Cotton 60s
House of Amayra

Farida is a celebration of floral rhythm and traditional geometry. Hand Printed on a rich dark teal base in Cotton 60s, the design unfolds through graceful floral vines, evoking the quiet elegance of garden motifs often found in classical Ajrakh textiles.

The vines are hand block printed in shades of indigo blue and madder red, colours drawn from centuries-old natural dye traditions. Each motif is defined by a distinctive black outline created using a traditional mixture of jaggery and iron oxide, a formulation that develops its depth slowly through oxidation and sun drying.

Running along the edge of the fabric is a thoughtfully designed border featuring bindu motifs and delicate small flower bootis, bringing balance and structure to the overall composition. This border placement allows the textile to be beautifully used in garments or interior applications where edge detailing becomes a design element.

The result is a textile that feels refined, timeless, and rooted in heritage craftsmanship.

Fabric & Craft

Fabric: Cotton 60s
Base Colour: Dark Teal
Technique: Traditional Ajrakh Hand Block Printing
Dyes: Natural dyes — Indigo, Madder, and iron-based black

Ajrakh printing is a centuries-old craft where patterns are applied using hand-carved wooden blocks through multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and sun drying. The layered process allows natural dyes to penetrate deeply into the fabric, creating the distinctive tones and depth that define authentic Ajrakh textiles.

Every metre of fabric carries the mark of the artisan’s hand, making each piece subtly unique.

The border placement makes it particularly suitable for garments or décor pieces where edge detailing enhances the design.

Care Instructions

Naturally dyed Ajrakh textiles require gentle care to preserve their colours and craftsmanship.

Washing

• Hand wash separately in cold water
• Use a mild liquid or pH-neutral detergent
• Avoid bleach and strong chemical detergents
• Do not soak for long periods
• Some colour release during initial washes is normal with natural dyes

Drying

• Dry in shade away from direct sunlight
• Do not tumble dry
• Avoid wringing the fabric

Ironing

• Iron on medium heat
• Preferably iron on the reverse side

Storage

• Store in a cool, dry place
• Use breathable cotton or muslin bags for long-term storage

With gentle care, the natural dyes develop a soft patina over time while the cotton fabric becomes even more comfortable.

The Beauty of Handmade

Ajrakh textiles are created entirely by hand through traditional block printing and natural dye processes. Slight variations in colour depth, alignment, or print intensity are natural and should be embraced as part of the fabric’s handmade character.

Each piece is a reflection of craft, time, and tradition.
